What is Marriage

Marriage has figured in the media repeatedly in recent time. Sadly, discussion about marriage has become bogged in a false dilemma which runs like this: ‘All people agree that marriage is a great thing. It is just that some people disagree who should be allowed to get married.’ But actually, the heart of the discussion should be the definition of marriage. A contemporary misunderstanding of marriage as merely an intense emotional bond is the cause of confusion. Nowadays, when many people think of marriage they think of merely an intense emotional bond. But what happens if spouses gradually stop feeling the intense emotions? Could a community be sustainable if it consisted merely ofintense emotional bonds? A more reasonable definition of marriage is an intimate life-long bond between one man and one woman inherently oriented towards generating new life. This understanding of marriage has been the foundation up which societies have been sustained. Such a definition is compatible with the Catholic Faith.
